# Overview

> Evidence-based medical AI, delivered through a real-time streaming API.

The Vera Health API gives you programmatic access to a medical AI assistant grounded in 60M+ peer-reviewed papers and clinical practice guidelines.

## Available APIs

> [card] [Chat API](https://docs.verahealth.ai/quickstart)
>
> Send a medical question and stream back an evidence-based answer with citations.

> [card] [API Reference](https://docs.verahealth.ai/api-reference)
>
> Full endpoint reference with request/response schemas and code samples.

## How it works

1. **Send a question** to `POST /api/chat/v2` with your API key.
2. **Receive a Server-Sent Events stream** of answer text, citations, and references.
3. **Resume the stream** via `GET /api/chat/v2/stream/{runId}` if your connection drops.

## Quick example

```bash theme={null}
curl -N -X POST https://www.verahealth.ai/api/chat/v2 \
  -H "x-api-key: YOUR_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{ "question": "What is the first-line treatment for hypertension?" }'
```
